STEVENSON/BRANDEL COLLECTION Donor Chester Stevenson, Jr. served with a medical unit during World War II--Company C, the 220th Armored Medical Bn. of the 20th Armored Division. (He was a dentist.) On VE (Victory in Europe) Day, May 8th, 1945, his unit entered and established their aid station in Laufen, Germany. They then liberated Oflag VII-C, a prison housed in Laufen Castle, which included prisoners from the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and some American civilians who were caught in Europe by the United States' unexpected and sudden declaration of war in December 1941. One of those American prisoners was Max Brandel, a cartoonist and writer who, after his release, had a successful career with the famous and notorious MAD Magazine. To show his appreciation for his release, Brandel drew caricatures of all of the members of Stevenson's platoon, a project which everyone reportedly enjoyed. This collection includes the hand-drawn caricature of the donor, and photographs of all of the drawings of his platoon mates, with their names and cryptic notes relating to their favorite sayings on the back.
