MCDOWALL, BRUCE CAMPBELL, 1884-1916 INVENTORY AND DESCRIPTION (Entered in the Library of Congress National Union Catalog of Manuscripts - NUCMC - as OCLC 795703257) Diaries, 1907-1916. Bruce C. McDowall, an engineer, came to the United States from England in 1907. In 1909, after working in survey camps in Northern California and at the Fort Flamath Agency, he arrived in Lane County. He was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad as a surveyor and construction superitendent on the Natron extension across the Cascade Mountains. In 1915 he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and lost his life in 1916 while serving in France. The diaries begin with McDowall's arrival in the United States and trace his work and travels until his death. Of particular interest are his entries describing daily happenings in the railroad construction camps. All volumes contain random camp and personal accounts. |
