KENNELL-ELLIS STUDIO, EUGENE, OREGON Documents only, 1923-1960 In 1923, E. W. Ellis formed a partnership with E. E. Kennell and opened the Kennell-Ellis Studio in Eugene. By the late 1920s they had become the largest photographic firm in Eugene and by the mid-1930s one of the largest photographic compaines in the Pacific Northwest, with some forty outlets in Oregon and Washington. As competition increased in the 1950s, they sold the individual outlets. As nearly as can be determinied, the negatives donated to the Lane County History Museum (as well as a collection at the University of Oregon Archives which pertain only to the University) are the only remaining commercial works of this tirm. Kennell-Ellis continued to be owned by the Ellis family for many years, but tocused on portraits and student photos for school yearbooks. It has since gone out of business. This manuscript collection contains documentation about the Kennell-Ellis images, which are cataloged separately into the Photograph Collection under the "KE: identification number. The orirginal negatives, 98% of which were volatile and deteriorating cellulose nitrate, have been disposed of. But all of the images were scanned first and high quality digital images are available for use. The photograph collection dates from 1923 to 1960, but focuses on the period from 1927 to 1950. It provides valuable documentation of Eugene, Springfield and Junction City businesses, including both exteriors and interiors, plus street scenes, railroad development, local organizations and a few other local subjects. (See Photograph section of this database for photograph listings.) INVENTORY and description. A camera and stand from Kennell-Ellis Studio are in the artifact collection. The number is 1978.086. |
