GILFRY FAMILY COLLECTION Documents, 1885-1920 Miscellaneous deeds, promissory notes and two small portraits from the Gilfry family (sometimes spelled Gilfrey) of the Cloverdale area in Lane County, Oregon. The family is connected to the family of Elijah Bristow, who was Lane County's first Euro-American settler in 1846 at Pleasant Hill. His daughter Delilah, who arrived in Oregon with the rest of the Bristow family in 1848, married John T. Gilfrey, an Oregon Trail pioneer of 1852. John settled in the Cloverdale area, operated a sawmill and owned and managed a mercantile store, with the help of his son, George L. Gilfry.. John also served as the postmaster, express agent and railroad agent for nearby Creswell. These documents relate to various members and associates of the family, including former Oregon governor John Whiteaker. Included are: --June 25, 1885 promisoory note to John Whiteaker for $76.03 from Christian and Ed Winzensied of Wingensied. ---July 1, 1885 promissory note to John Whiteaker for $25.00 from Christian Winzensied or Wingensied. ---Sept. 7, 1885 handwritten promissory note to John Whiteaker for $100 to be paid in "two or three days", from a member of the Gilfry family (initials illegible--possibly C. W.). ---Jan. 20, 1888 handwritten promissory note to John Whiteaker for $60.00 from Christian Winzensied or Wingensied. ---Jan.5, 1890 statement for Abstract of Title for Hanniah (actual spelling is Hananiah) Buoy and his wife, from A. E. Wheeler & Company, Abstracts of Title. --Dec. 23, 1899 Warranty Deed from Henry H. and Margaret Gilfry to George L. Gilfry for the Hananiah Buoy donation land claim property in the Cloverdale area of Lane County. ---Dec. 4, 1904 Warranty Deed from George L. and Louisa M. Gilfry to Caroline B. Gilfry for the Hananiah Buoy donation land claim property in the Cloverdale area of Lane County. ---Sept. 22, 1920 Warranty Deed from Romolo and Anthony Vatuone to J. T. Gilfry --Two small portraits mounted on carboard (each 2 1/2" x 4 ") of Mr. and Mrs. William Jones of Cloverdale. According to notes on the back of the photographs, William Jones built the historic Cloverdale area farmhouse where "John and Jo Gilfry live".
