Scope & Content |
(Entered in the Library of Congress National Union Catalog of Manuscripts - NUCMC - as OCLC 795741941) MEYER & KYLE; WILLIAM KYLE & SONS, CO., FLORENCE, OREGON, 1887-1940. Records, 1887-1940. Formerly Meyer & Kyle, general merchandisers, William Kyle & Sons had a number of business interests on the Siuslaw River and along the Oregon coast. These included a salmon cannery, stores in Florence and Mapleton, the Florence Lumber Company, the three-masted schooner "Bella", and the bar tug "Roberta" for hauling goods on the river. The records consist of day books, cash books, incoming and outgoing correspondence, invoices and receipts, inventories, Mapleton and Florence store records (including cash books, fish receipts, ledgers and invoices), Florence Lumber Company records, and ship accounts for steamers "Lillian" and "Robarts" and the schooner "Bella". The collection contains information about the Kyle family, real estate, taxes, Lane County politics, and community affairs. The correspondence reflects the various problems encountered in the maritime business: "As to captain, nothing new to report. That fellow Mack has not been in sence you left. Brown is in every day, but he does not know what he wants. I am looking around for a a captain, but it is hard work to find one with money [to buy shares]. There are lots without it that would be glad to get the job but have no money." It was a hazardous trade as well: "'Ocean Spray' ashore on North Beach. Libal to be total wreck. Sails and rigger all gone." This collection was used in Thomas R. Cox's "Mills and Markets, A History of the Pacific Coast Lumber Industry to 1900" (Seattle 1974), and "William Kyle & the Pacific Lumber Trade", Journal of Forest History, Vo. 19, No. 1 ONE CASH BOOK, DATED FROM BETWEEN 1900 AND 1910, IS ON DISPLAY IN THE "LOST TOWNS - BACK OFFICE" LOGGING EXHIBIT. 10/21/2016.
